 Today, 18th May 2026, Kenya experienced a major nationwide matatu strike that greatly affected transport and normal daily activities across the country. Thousands of commuters were stranded in towns and cities, especially in Nairobi, as matatu operators, taxi drivers, boda boda riders, and truck operators stayed off the roads to protest against the sharp increase in fuel prices. The strike was mainly caused by the recent rise in the prices of diesel and petrol announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA). Reports indicated that diesel prices increased significantly, making it difficult for matatu operators to continue operating normally. Transport operators argued that the high fuel prices had increased the cost of doing business and reduced their profits.
