Today, 18th May 2026, Kenya experienced a major nationwide matatu strike that greatly affected transport and normal daily activities across the country. Thousands of commuters were stranded in towns and cities, especially in Nairobi, as matatu operators, taxi drivers, boda boda riders, and truck operators stayed off the roads to protest against the sharp increase in fuel prices. The strike was mainly caused by the recent rise in the prices of diesel and petrol announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA). Reports indicated that diesel prices increased significantly, making it difficult for matatu operators to continue operating normally. Transport operators argued that the high fuel prices had increased the cost of doing business and reduced their profits. As a result, matatu associations announced a nationwide strike and also proposed a 50 percent increase in fares. The effects of the strike were felt immediately across the country. Many workers and students were unable to reach their destinations on time. In Nairobi and other towns, bus stages were crowded with stranded passengers searching for transport. Some people were forced to walk long distances to work, school, or business centers because public transport vehicles were unavailable. Major roads such as Thika Road, Magadi Road, and the Nairobi-Nakuru highway experienced disruptions due to demonstrations and road blockages. Schools were also affected by the strike. Several learning institutions advised students to remain at home because teachers, school buses, and parents faced transport difficulties. Some schools temporarily suspended classes to ensure the safety of learners. The government responded by urging calm and assuring Kenyans of security during the protests. Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi stated that the strike was unnecessary and explained that the government had already taken measures to cushion citizens from even higher fuel prices. However, many Kenyans continued expressing frustration over the rising cost of living. The matatu industry plays a very important role in Kenya because it carries millions of passengers daily. Matatus are the main form of public transport for many Kenyans, especially in urban areas like Nairobi. Therefore, any disruption in the sector greatly affects the economy, education, and social activities.
